Step 1: Download the module from SourceForge
The Pill Pals Module download page is hosted on SourceForge. Clinics can visit the project page and download the module files for installation or technical review.

Step 2: Review your OpenEMR environment
Before installation, your clinic should confirm which OpenEMR version you are running, who manages your OpenEMR server, and whether your installation is self-hosted, vendor-hosted, or supported by an outside developer. If your clinic has an IT vendor or OpenEMR consultant, ask that person to review the installation package and confirm compatibility with your environment.
Step 3: Register your clinic with Pill Pals
After downloading the module, the clinic should register with Pill Pals to request a license key. The license key helps connect the clinic to Pill Pals’ workflow for eligible prescription routing.
Register your OpenEMR clinic and request a Pill Pals Module license key.
Step 4: Activate and test the workflow
Once the module is installed and the license key is issued, the clinic should activate the module in its OpenEMR environment and test the workflow using non-production or carefully controlled test scenarios as appropriate. Confirm that prescribers understand which prescriptions are eligible, what information must be entered, and how staff should communicate with patients.
Step 5: Train prescribers and staff
Successful medication access requires more than software installation. Clinics should train staff on when to use the Pill Pals Module, how to explain the self-pay option to patients, and how to document prescription routing decisions. Prescribers should continue following all clinical, legal, and professional standards.
What the module is not
The Pill Pals Module is not a blanket replacement for every e-prescribing system, insurance benefit tool, prior authorization workflow, EPCS solution, or pharmacy. It is a practical OpenEMR module for sending eligible prescriptions to Pill Pals Pharmacy, especially for patients who need a self-pay medication option.
