KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Affordable prescription medication isn’t a phrase most people hear often. But one Kansas City pharmacy said it’s working to change that in a big way.
A local pharmaceutical company, Health Pals, said it has created a system that allows them to offer dramatically reduced-cost medications – including a $99 weight-loss drug they guarantee will help patients shed pounds without breaking the bank.
Henry Service, counsel and vice president for Health Pals, said their mission has always been centered on access.
“The work that was put in was designed to be able to deliver affordable pharmaceutical products to everybody,” he said.
Health Pals was founded by Dr. Felicia Udoji-Eddings, who said the idea grew from witnessing how many people were struggling to afford their medication.
“We saw so many people suffering with medication unaffordability…We put our heads together and the end result is the Health Pals company,” she said.
The company uses a vertically integrated model, producing and managing much of its work in-house.
Leaders said they are FDA-licensed, focused on patient outcomes and not driven by profit margins. Their goal is to make their community healthier by keeping essential medications affordable.
Chief Manufacturing Officer Keith Koehler said the human impact is clear.
“There are so many people who simply can’t afford a lot of the products, and so by making them affordable, you can really change a lot of people’s lives in a positive way,” Koehler said.
Service said they want access to extend beyond people with high-paying jobs.
“We want the whole city to be fit and not just the people who can afford to do it because they have a Hollywood job or something like that,” Service said.
Health Pals is already in negotiations with Junction City, Kansas, and leaders said they will soon work with the City of Jacksonville to bring low-cost weight-loss drugs to communities they feel have been excluded from this type of treatment.
But they’re not stopping there.
The company hopes to partner with Kansas City next and said affordable weight-loss drugs are just the beginning.
They plan to offer multiple medications at equally accessible price points.
“What we’ve decided to do is fill that gap where the average American will be able to afford pharmaceutical products,” Service said.
