Overview

Doxazosin tablets are taken by mouth and are an alpha1 adrenergic antagonist. They are indicated to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.

For BPH, treatment is started at 1 mg once daily and may be increased over time, with a maximum recommended dose of 8 mg once daily. For hypertension, treatment is also started at 1 mg once daily and may be increased as needed up to 16 mg once daily. Blood pressure should be monitored after the first dose and after each dose increase.

The label warns that postural hypotension, dizziness, and fainting can occur, especially after the first dose or a dose increase. It also warns about a risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery, and that prostate cancer should be ruled out before treatment for BPH. Do not use doxazosin if there is hypersensitivity to doxazosin, other quinazolines, or any tablet component.
