Overview

Citalopram tablets are a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. They are taken by mouth once daily, with or without food. The label says the initial dosage is 20 mg once daily, and after at least one week it may be increased to a maximum of 40 mg once daily.

The label warns that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients, and citalopram tablets are not approved for use in pediatric patients. Patients should be monitored for worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, or suicidal thoughts, especially when treatment starts or the dose changes.

Citalopram tablets also carry warnings about QT prolongation and torsade de pointes, serotonin syndrome, bleeding risk, mania or hypomania, seizures, angle-closure glaucoma, hyponatremia, and sexual dysfunction. The label also says to reduce the dose gradually when stopping treatment whenever possible.

Available strengths are 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg tablets. The 40 mg tablets are scored, film-coated, and white.
