Teens and young adults may need emergency contraception after unprotected sex, a condom break, missed birth control, or sexual assault. The situation can feel embarrassing or frightening, but getting accurate information quickly is important.

What emergency contraception does

Emergency contraception helps reduce the chance of pregnancy after sex. Levonorgestrel morning after pills, including Plan B One-Step and generic versions, work mainly by delaying or preventing ovulation. They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections and are not the same as the abortion pill.

Access and privacy

Many levonorgestrel emergency contraception products are available over the counter in the United States. Some pharmacies keep products in a locked case or behind the counter, so asking staff may be necessary. A pharmacist can also answer questions privately. You can request a private counseling conversation if you do not want to speak at the register.

When to get medical help

Medical help is important if sexual assault occurred, if STI exposure is possible, if there is severe pain or heavy bleeding, if you have a positive pregnancy test, or if you may need HIV post-exposure prevention. Clinics, urgent care centers, sexual health programs, and trusted health professionals can help.

What about birth control going forward?

Needing emergency contraception does not mean someone did something wrong. It may simply mean a backup plan is needed. A clinician can explain birth control options, condoms, STI testing, and how to handle missed pills or late methods in the future.

Myths that can cause delay

Emergency contraception does not cause long-term infertility, and it does not end an established pregnancy. It is most useful when taken quickly. Fear, shame, or misinformation should not stop someone from seeking care.
