Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Atenolol tablets are a beta1-selective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, help manage angina due to coronary atherosclerosis, and reduce cardiovascular mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction. Atenolol is available as oral tablets in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg strengths.
The label says atenolol lowers blood pressure and reduces heart rate and the heart’s oxygen demand. It may be used alone or with other antihypertensive medicines. In acute myocardial infarction, treatment can be started as soon as the patient’s clinical condition allows.
Atenolol should not be used in certain conditions, including sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, overt cardiac failure, or a history of hypersensitivity to atenolol or its components. The label also warns about abrupt stopping, use with some calcium channel blockers, bronchospastic disease, hypoglycemia, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
Store at 20 to 25 C (68 to 77 F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].
