Overview

Baclofen tablets, USP are a muscle relaxant and antispastic medicine. Each tablet for oral use contains 10 mg or 20 mg baclofen.

According to the label, baclofen is used to help relieve signs and symptoms of spasticity related to multiple sclerosis, especially flexor spasms, pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity. It may also be of some value in patients with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases.

The label says baclofen is not indicated for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders. Its use in stroke, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson's disease has not been established and is not recommended for those conditions.

Storage Information

Dispense in a tight container as defined in the USP with a child-resistant closure. Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take baclofen exactly as prescribed and follow the dose titration plan if one is provided.
  • The label says treatment is usually started at a low dose and increased gradually.
  • Do not stop baclofen suddenly unless your prescriber tells you to, because abrupt withdrawal has been associated with hallucinations and seizures.
  • Baclofen may cause drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, or fatigue.
  • Use caution with driving, operating machinery, or other activities that require alertness.
  • Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may add to baclofen's effects.
  • Tell your healthcare professional if you have impaired kidney function, since dose reduction may be needed.
  • The label says baclofen should be used with caution in epilepsy and that seizure control should be monitored.
  • If baclofen is used during pregnancy, the label warns about the possibility of neonatal withdrawal when treatment continues throughout pregnancy.
