Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Baclofen Tablets USP are a prescription medicine used as a muscle relaxant and antispastic. The label says they are useful for helping relieve signs and symptoms of spasticity from multiple sclerosis, including flexor spasms, pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity. They may also be of some value in people with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases.

The label says baclofen is not indicated for skeletal muscle spasm caused by rheumatic disorders. Use in stroke, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s disease has not been established, so it is not recommended for those conditions.

Baclofen is taken by mouth and the dose is started low and increased gradually to find the best effect. The label also notes important risks, including drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue, as well as warnings about abrupt stopping, sedation, and use in pregnancy or kidney problems.

Storage Information

Dispense in a well-closed container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required). Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].

  • Alcohol and other CNS depressants may add to baclofenu2019s nervous system effects.
  • Tell a healthcare professional if there is kidney disease, since the label says dosage reduction may be needed.
  • The label says baclofen should be used during pregnancy only if the benefit clearly justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • Common adverse reactions reported include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, constipation, and urinary frequency.
