Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Baclofen tablets are a prescription muscle relaxant and antispastic medicine available in 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg strengths for oral use. The label says it is used to help relieve signs and symptoms of spasticity related to multiple sclerosis, including flexor spasms, pain, clonus, and muscle rigidity.

The label also says baclofen may be of some value in patients with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases. It is not indicated for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders, and its effectiveness has not been established for stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s disease.

Baclofen should not be used by people with hypersensitivity to baclofen. The label warns against stopping baclofen suddenly, because hallucinations and seizures have occurred with abrupt withdrawal.

Common side effects listed include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue. The label also advises caution with sedation, alcohol, and other central nervous system depressants.

Storage Information

Store at 20º to 25ºC (68º to 77ºF) [see USP controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take baclofen exactly as prescribed.
  • Do not stop baclofen suddenly; the label warns that abrupt withdrawal can cause hallucinations and seizures.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness, so be careful with activities that need alertness.
  • Avoid alcohol and use caution with other central nervous system depressants because effects may be additive.
  • Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how baclofen affects you.
  • Tell the prescriber if you have kidney problems, because the label says baclofen is mainly removed by the kidneys and dosage reduction may be needed.
  • Report signs of unusual confusion, dizziness, weakness, or fatigue if they occur.
  • The label says safety and effectiveness in children under 12 years have not been established.
  • If baclofen is no longer needed, the label says it should be reduced slowly rather than stopped all at once.
