Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Baclofen Tablets USP are a muscle relaxant and antispastic medicine available as 10 mg and 20 mg oral tablets. The label says baclofen may help reduce signs and symptoms of spasticity related to multiple sclerosis, especially flexor spasms, pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity.

The tablets may also be of some value in some people with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases. The label says baclofen is not indicated for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders, and its effectiveness has not been established for stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s disease.

Baclofen is not for people with hypersensitivity to baclofen. The label warns that sudden stopping can cause hallucinations and seizures, so the dose should be reduced slowly unless there is a serious adverse reaction. It also warns about sedation, caution with alcohol and other central nervous system depressants, and extra caution in people with impaired kidney function.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a well-closed container as defined in the USP, with a child-resistant closure (as required).

Key Counseling Points

  • Take baclofen exactly as directed in the label information and follow the prescribed dose schedule.
  • The dose is usually started low and increased gradually to find the best effect.
  • Do not stop baclofen suddenly unless directed, because abrupt withdrawal has been linked to hallucinations and seizures.
  • Baclofen can cause drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue.
  • Use caution with activities such as driving or using machinery if you feel sedated or less alert.
  • Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may add to baclofenu2019s effects.
  • Tell a healthcare professional if you have impaired kidney function, since the label says dosage may need to be reduced.
  • If the medicine is being used during pregnancy, the label says the benefits should clearly justify the potential risk to the fetus.
  • The label says safety and effectiveness in children under 12 years have not been established.
  • Report side effects such as confusion, unusual mood changes, trouble breathing, or seizures promptly.
