Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Benztropine mesylate tablets are prescription tablets for oral use that come in 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg strengths. The label says they are used as an adjunct in the treatment of all forms of parkinsonism.
The tablets are also used to help control extrapyramidal disorders caused by neuroleptic drugs, such as phenothiazines, except for tardive dyskinesia. The label notes that treatment should be individualized and started at low doses, with gradual increases as needed.
Benztropine has anticholinergic effects and can cause side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, confusion, hallucinations, and drowsiness or weakness. The label also warns that it may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery and that heat-related problems can occur, especially with certain other medicines.
Store at 20° to 25° C (68° to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30° C (59° to 86°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in well-closed containers as defined in the USP.
