Key Counseling Points

• Take citalopram once daily, with or without food.
• Do not take more than the prescribed dose; doses above 40 mg once daily are not recommended.
• If you are over 60, have liver impairment, or are a CYP2C19 poor metabolizer, the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily.
• Do not take citalopram with MAOIs, or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI; at least 14 days should also pass after stopping citalopram before starting an MAOI.
• Tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines, especially other serotonergic drugs and drugs that can prolong the QT interval.
• Watch for symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, fever, tremor, stiffness, confusion, or diarrhea, and seek medical help if they occur.
• Report signs of irregular heartbeat such as dizziness, palpitations, or fainting.
• Do not stop citalopram suddenly; the label recommends gradually reducing the dose when discontinuing.
• Tell your healthcare provider if you notice unusual bleeding, mood changes, mania or hypomania, seizures, low sodium symptoms, or sexual side effects.
• The most common adverse reaction reported was ejaculation disorder, primarily delayed ejaculation.
