Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets are prescription medicines for short-term use. The label says they are used along with rest and physical therapy to help relieve muscle spasm linked to acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. They are not found to be effective for spasticity from cerebral or spinal cord disease.

The tablets are available in 5 mg, 7.5 mg, and 10 mg strengths and are taken by mouth. For most patients, the recommended dose is 5 mg three times a day, with the dose increased based on individual response if needed. Use for longer than two or three weeks is not recommended.

Common side effects in studies included drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and dizziness. The label also reports that cyclobenzaprine may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other central nervous system depressants.

The product should not be used by people who are allergic to any component, who are taking or recently took MAO inhibitors, or who have certain heart conditions or hyperthyroidism. The label also warns about serotonin syndrome when used with certain other medicines.

  • Tell a healthcare professional about all medicines being taken, especially SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, verapamil, or MAO inhibitors.
  • Seek medical care right away if symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur, such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations, sweating, fast heartbeat, fever, tremor, muscle rigidity, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Use caution if you have urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, increased eye pressure, or are taking anticholinergic medicines.
  • Older adults and people with liver impairment may need lower starting doses and slower titration, according to the label.

Helpful Patient Education
