Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets are used along with rest and physical therapy for short-term relief of muscle spasm associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The label says improvement may include less pain, tenderness, limitation of motion, and restriction in daily activities.

This medicine is not found effective for spasticity related to cerebral or spinal cord disease, or in children with cerebral palsy. It is intended for short use only, generally up to two or three weeks.

The label warns that cyclobenzaprine can cause drowsiness and dry mouth, and may affect alertness. It can also increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when taken with certain other medicines. Serious heart-related risks and other severe effects are listed in the label for certain patients and overdose situations.

Storage Information

protect against the rare but potentially critical manifestations described above, obtain an ECG and immediately initiate cardiac monitoring. Protect the patient's airway, establish an intravenous line and initiate gastric decontamination. STORAGE Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Use this medicine only as directed and only for short periods, generally up to two or three weeks.
  • It is meant to be used with rest and physical therapy for acute muscle spasm.
  • Drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness are among the most common side effects.
  • Be careful with activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, because the medicine may impair mental or physical abilities.
  • Alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants may increase its effects.
  • Tell a healthcare professional about all medicines being taken, especially SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, verapamil, or MAO inhibitors.
  • Seek medical care right away if symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur, such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations, sweating, fast heartbeat, fever, tremor, or muscle rigidity.
  • Use caution if there is a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, increased eye pressure, or liver problems.
  • Older adults and people with mild hepatic impairment are started on 5 mg and titrated slowly upward according to the label.
  • Get emergency help for suspected overdose; the label says hospital monitoring is required as soon as possible.

Helpful Patient Education

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets USP are a prescription muscle relaxant used with rest and physical therapy for short-term relief of muscle spasm associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The label describes improvement in pain, tenderness, movement, and daily activity limitations, and notes that use longer than two or three weeks is not recommended.

Common educational points for cyclobenzaprine tablets include drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness. The label also includes important warnings about serotonin syndrome, interactions with alcohol and other CNS depressants, and special caution in older adults and people with liver impairment.
