Medication Summary

Overview
Enalapril maleate tablets are prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of heart failure. The label also describes use in clinically stable patients with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction to help reduce the development of overt heart failure and hospitalizations for heart failure.
This medicine is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by lowering angiotensin II, which helps relax blood vessels and can reduce blood pressure and the workload on the heart.
The label includes an important boxed warning about fetal toxicity. Enalapril maleate tablets should be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected because drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and death to the developing fetus.
