Medication Summary
Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Overview
Ergocalciferol Capsules, USP is a synthetic form of vitamin D for oral use. Each softgel contains 1,250 mcg of ergocalciferol, which is equivalent to 50,000 USP units of vitamin D.
The label says ergocalciferol is used to treat hypoparathyroidism, refractory rickets (vitamin D resistant rickets), and familial hypophosphatemia. It also notes that vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus and supports bone mineralization.
The label warns that the range between therapeutic and toxic doses is narrow. Dosage must be individualized under close medical supervision, and blood calcium and phosphorous levels may need regular monitoring.
The product is not for use in patients with hypercalcemia, malabsorption syndrome, abnormal sensitivity to vitamin D, or hypervitaminosis D.
Storage Information
protection of the fetus, therefore, the use of vitamin D in excess of the recommended dietary allowance during normal pregnancy should be avoided unless, in the judgment of the physician, potential benefits in a specific, unique case outweigh the significant hazards involved. Store at 25° C (77° F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30° C (59° to 86° F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP.
Key Counseling Points
- Take this medicine only as directed by the prescriber; the label says the dose must be individualized.
- Do not use more vitamin D from foods, supplements, or other medicines without checking with a clinician, since the label advises all sources be evaluated.
- The label states the therapeutic and toxic dose range is narrow, so careful follow-up is important.
- Watch for signs listed on the label of too much vitamin D, such as nausea, constipation, weakness, weight loss, or increased urination.
- The label says blood calcium and phosphorous may need to be checked regularly during treatment.
- Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
- If this medicine is used during nursing, the label notes caution and infant calcium monitoring may be required in certain situations.
- Tell the prescriber about other medicines, including mineral oil and thiazide diuretics, because the label describes interactions.
- Protect from light and moisture and keep in the original tight, light-resistant container.
