Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Famotidine tablets are an oral prescription medicine in the histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist class. They are indicated for adults and pediatric patients 40 kg and greater for active duodenal ulcer, active gastric ulcer, symptomatic nonerosive GERD, and erosive esophagitis due to GERD diagnosed by biopsy.

In adults, famotidine is also used for pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasias, and to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence. The label says the tablets may be taken with or without food and may be given with antacids.

The most common adverse reactions reported were headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea. The label also warns about possible CNS adverse reactions, especially in elderly patients and people with renal impairment.

Famotidine tablets 20 mg are light yellow to yellow, round, film-coated tablets debossed with “11” on one side and “plain” on the other side.

Storage Information

STORAGE AND HANDLING Famotidine Tablets USP, 20 mg are light yellow to yellow, round film-coated tablets debossed with ‘‘11‘’ on one side and ‘’plain’’ on the other side. Storage Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a USP tight, light-resistant container.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take famotidine once daily before bedtime or twice daily in the morning and before bedtime, as directed.
  • Famotidine may be taken with or without food.
  • Famotidine may be given with antacids.
  • The tablet 20 mg is light yellow to yellow, round, and film-coated with u201c11u201d on one side and u201cplainu201d on the other.
  • Common side effects reported include headache, dizziness, constipation, and diarrhea.
  • Tell a clinician about any history of serious allergic reaction to famotidine or other H2 receptor antagonists.
  • People with renal impairment may need a lower dose; the label says dosage adjustments are recommended.
  • Elderly patients and patients with renal impairment have a higher risk of CNS adverse reactions, such as confusion or hallucinations.
  • The label notes that lack of GI symptoms does not rule out gastric malignancy in adults with a suboptimal response or early relapse.

Helpful Patient Education

Famotidine tablets are oral H2 receptor antagonist tablets used for several acid-related conditions, including duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, GERD, erosive esophagitis due to GERD, and certain hypersecretory conditions in adults. The label also includes dosing guidance for adults and pediatric patients 40 kg and greater, with renal dose adjustments when needed.

This product page information is based on DailyMed label content and is intended to help patients and caregivers understand approved uses, administration instructions, common adverse reactions, and important safety warnings for famotidine tablets.
