Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Hydralazine hydrochloride tablets are an oral antihypertensive medicine used for essential hypertension, either by itself or as an add-on treatment. The tablets come in several strengths, including 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.

The label says hydralazine works by relaxing blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and can increase heart rate and cardiac output. It is rapidly absorbed after oral use and is processed by the liver before being excreted mainly in the urine.

The label warns that hydralazine can sometimes cause a lupus-like reaction, including kidney inflammation, and it may also be associated with blood count changes, angina, dizziness, and other side effects. Patients should take it regularly and continuously as directed and may need periodic blood tests during prolonged therapy.

Storage Information

protection of the airway. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP. Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take hydralazine regularly and continuously as directed.
  • Use caution if you have a history of coronary artery disease, mitral valvular rheumatic heart disease, or hypersensitivity to hydralazine, since these are listed contraindications.
  • Report symptoms that may suggest a lupus-like reaction, such as joint pain, fever, chest pain, or ongoing malaise.
  • Seek medical attention for possible blood-related problems such as unusual bruising, persistent fever, or signs of infection.
  • Dizziness or postural hypotension can occur; rise slowly if you feel lightheaded.
  • The label lists headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, palpitations, and tachycardia among common adverse reactions.
  • Peripheral neuritis symptoms such as tingling, numbness, or paresthesia should be reported.
  • If symptoms of angina, shortness of breath, or other cardiac symptoms occur, contact a healthcare professional promptly.
  • Some interactions and precautions are noted, including caution with MAO inhibitors and with other potent antihypertensive drugs.
  • If therapy is prolonged, the label says complete blood counts and antinuclear antibody testing are indicated before and periodically during treatment.
