Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Indapamide tablets are a prescription oral medicine used to treat high blood pressure. They are also indicated for the treatment of salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure.

The label says indapamide is a diuretic, which means it helps the body remove extra salt and water. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines.

The label warns that indapamide can affect body salts and minerals, especially sodium and potassium. Periodic blood tests may be used to monitor electrolytes, uric acid, glucose, kidney function, and other labs during treatment.

Do not use indapamide if you have no urine output (anuria) or if you are allergic to indapamide or other sulfonamide-derived drugs.

Storage Information

Store at controlled room temperature 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP]. Dispense in a tight, light-resistant container as defined in the USP.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take indapamide exactly as prescribed.
  • For high blood pressure, the label says the usual starting dose is taken once daily in the morning.
  • For swelling from congestive heart failure, the label says the usual starting dose is also taken once daily in the morning.
  • Your prescriber may order blood tests to check electrolytes such as sodium and potassium.
  • Report symptoms that can occur with fluid or electrolyte imbalance, such as dry mouth, thirst, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, drowsiness, restlessness, or a fast heartbeat.
  • The label warns that low potassium can occur, and monitoring is especially important in people at higher risk.
  • Tell your clinician if you have severe kidney disease, liver disease, gout, diabetes, or a history of fluid or electrolyte problems, since the label says caution may be needed.
  • The label warns indapamide should generally not be used with lithium because of a risk of lithium toxicity.
  • Get urgent help for sudden decreased vision or eye pain, which the label lists as possible signs of an acute eye reaction.
  • Possible side effects reported in studies included headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, weakness, and increased urination.

Helpful Patient Education

Indapamide tablets, USP are a prescription diuretic used for hypertension and for salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure. The DailyMed label describes indapamide as an oral antihypertensive/diuretic that may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines.

Educational product information may also include important safety topics from the label, such as electrolyte changes, kidney and liver cautions, and reported adverse reactions. Patients and caregivers should review the full prescribing information for complete details.
