Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Lisinopril tablets are an ACE inhibitor taken by mouth. The label says they are used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children 6 years and older, to help reduce signs and symptoms of systolic heart failure, and to reduce the risk of death after a hemodynamically stable acute myocardial infarction.

The label carries a boxed warning about fetal toxicity. If pregnancy is detected, lisinopril should be stopped as soon as possible because medicines that act on the renin-angiotensin system can injure or kill a developing fetus.

Lisinopril is not for use with certain other medicines in some situations, including sacubitril-containing products and aliskiren in patients with diabetes. The label also warns about angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney problems, high potassium, and liver injury.

Common side effects listed for hypertension include headache, dizziness, and cough. For heart failure, hypotension and chest pain are listed; for acute myocardial infarction, hypotension is listed.

Storage Information

Store at controlled room temperature, 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take lisinopril by mouth exactly as directed on the prescription label.
  • The tablet is used for high blood pressure, heart failure, or after certain heart attacks, depending on the prescribed indication.
  • If pregnancy is detected, lisinopril should be discontinued as soon as possible according to the label.
  • Get medical help right away for signs of angioedema, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, glottis, or throat, or trouble breathing.
  • The label warns that lisinopril can cause low blood pressure, especially in people with certain heart or kidney conditions or volume depletion.
  • Kidney function and serum potassium may need periodic monitoring while taking lisinopril.
  • Tell a clinician about all medicines being taken, especially diuretics, NSAIDs, lithium, potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, sacubitril products, or aliskiren.
  • Do not use lisinopril with a neprilysin inhibitor such as sacubitril, and do not take it within 36 hours of switching to or from sacubitril/valsartan.
  • The label says breastfeeders should not breastfeed while taking lisinopril.
  • If dizziness or faintness occurs, use caution and follow the prescriberu2019s directions.

Helpful Patient Education

Lisinopril tablets are an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used for the treatment of hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older, adjunct therapy for heart failure, and reduction of mortality after hemodynamically stable acute myocardial infarction. The DailyMed label also includes key safety warnings about fetal toxicity, angioedema, hypotension, kidney function changes, hyperkalemia, and important drug interactions.
