Overview

Losartan potassium tablets are a prescription angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) taken by mouth. They are used to treat high blood pressure in adults and in children 6 years and older.

The tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in some patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. In patients with type 2 diabetes, a history of hypertension, elevated serum creatinine, and proteinuria, losartan potassium tablets are used to help slow progression of diabetic nephropathy.

The label includes a boxed warning for fetal toxicity. Losartan potassium can cause harm to an unborn baby, and it should be discontinued as soon as possible when pregnancy is detected.
