Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions

Starting dose is 60 mg once daily (varies with individual patient, see full prescribing information) as long as clinically indicated (2.1)

1. if ulcer present, continue Omeprazole 20 mg once daily for an additional 18 days.

2. if ulcer present, continue Omeprazole 20 mg once daily for an additional 14 days.

3. an additional 4 weeks of treatment may be given if no response; if recurrence additional 4 to 8 week courses may be considered.

4. studied for 12 months. Reduce the dosage to 10 mg once daily for patients with hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh Class A, B, or C) and Asian patients (8.6, 8.7)

  • Gastric Malignancy: In adults, symptomatic response does not preclude the presence of gastric malignancy. Consider additional follow-up and diagnostic testing. (5.1)
  • Acute Tubulointerstitial Nephritis: discontinue treatment and evaluate patients. (5.2)
  • Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea: PPI therapy may be associated with increased risk. (5.3)
  • Bone Fracture: Long-term and multiple daily dose PPI therapy may be associated with an increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine. (5.4)
  • Severe Cutaneous

Overview

Omeprazole delayed-release capsules are a proton pump inhibitor used for several acid-related conditions. The label says they are used in adults for active duodenal ulcer, H. pylori eradication with certain antibiotics, active benign gastric ulcer, and pathological hypersecretory conditions. They are also used for GERD-related symptoms and erosive esophagitis in patients 2 years of age and older.

The capsules should be taken before meals. They should be swallowed whole and not chewed. For people who cannot swallow the capsule whole, the label gives instructions for opening the capsule and sprinkling the pellets on applesauce, then swallowing right away with cool water without chewing or crushing the pellets.

The label lists common side effects in adults as headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and flatulence. STORAGE AND HANDLING Omeprazole Delayed-Release Capsules, USP 10 mg are size ‘3’ two piece hard gelatin capsules with a light blue to blue body with “G” imprinted in black ink and an orange cap with “G230” imprinted in black ink.   • Take omeprazole before meals.
  • Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew it.
  • If you cannot swallow the capsule whole, the label allows opening it and sprinkling the pellets on applesauce.
  • Swallow the applesauce and pellets right away with a glass of cool water.
  • Do not chew or crush the pellets.
  • Do not save the applesauce and pellets for future use.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next dose.
  • Do not take two doses at one time to make up for a missed dose.
  • Antacids may be used along with omeprazole.
  • Contact a healthcare professional if serious skin reactions, severe diarrhea, or signs of hypersensitivity occur.
