Overview

Paroxetine tablets are a film-coated prescription medicine taken by mouth and are used in adults for major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The label includes a boxed warning about an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients taking antidepressants. Paroxetine tablets are not approved for use in pediatric patients.

The label also warns about serotonin syndrome, bleeding risk, activation of mania or hypomania, seizures, angle-closure glaucoma, hyponatremia, sexual dysfunction, and possible fetal harm. Some medicines should not be taken with paroxetine, including MAOIs, pimozide, and thioridazine.

• Take paroxetine as a single daily dose in the morning, with or without food.
• Do not use paroxetine with MAOIs, pimozide, or thioridazine.
• Tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines and supplements, especially other serotonergic drugs.
• Watch for symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heartbeat, or muscle rigidity.
• Do not stop paroxetine suddenly; the label says the dose should be reduced gradually when discontinuing.
• Report any new or worsening suicidal thoughts, unusual behavior changes, or mood changes right away.
• Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of bipolar disorder, mania, hypomania, seizures, or narrow-angle eye problems.
• Paroxetine may increase bleeding risk, especially with aspirin, NSAIDs, antiplatelet drugs, warfarin, or other anticoagulants.
• Paroxetine may cause sexual dysfunction; the label says patients should be asked about sexual function before and during treatment.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, the label says paroxetine should be considered only after reviewing other available treatment options.
