Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Prednisone Tablets USP are prescription corticosteroid tablets for oral use. The label lists 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg strengths. Prednisone is a glucocorticoid that is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

The label describes prednisone tablets as being used for a wide range of conditions, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, collagen, skin, allergic, eye, respiratory, blood, cancer-related, kidney, gastrointestinal, nervous system, and other diseases. It is also used for some specific acute flare-ups and for palliative management in certain cancers.

Prednisone tablets should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections or in those with known hypersensitivity to components. The label warns that corticosteroids can suppress the immune system, increase infection risk, and may worsen or reactivate certain infections such as tuberculosis, varicella, measles, hepatitis B, fungal infections, amebiasis, and Strongyloides infestation.

Storage Information

protecting against undesirable pharmacologic effects. Store at 20° to 25 °C (68° to 77 °F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30 °C (59° to 86 °F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight container, as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • This is a prescription corticosteroid tablet for oral use.
  • The label lists several approved uses across endocrine, rheumatic, skin, allergic, eye, respiratory, blood, cancer-related, kidney, gastrointestinal, and nervous system conditions.
  • Do not use if you have systemic fungal infections or a known allergy to any component.
  • Corticosteroids can lower resistance to infection and may mask signs of infection.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if you are taking immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids; seek medical advice if exposed.
  • The label warns about possible reactivation of tuberculosis and hepatitis B in some patients.
  • Do not receive smallpox vaccination while on corticosteroid therapy; other immunizations may also be a concern, especially at high doses.
  • Long-term use may cause adrenal suppression, so the dose should be reduced gradually rather than stopped abruptly when therapy is discontinued.
  • Report suspected adverse reactions to Strides Pharma Inc. at 1-877-244-9825, FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088, or www.fda.gov/medwatch.
