Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Prednisone tablets are a prescription glucocorticoid (corticosteroid) taken by mouth. The label describes use in many different conditions, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, lung, blood, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and other disorders.

The label says prednisone has potent anti-inflammatory effects and can also affect metabolism and the immune response. Because it can suppress the immune system, it may increase the risk of infection or reactivate some infections.

Do not use prednisone tablets in systemic fungal infections or if you have known hypersensitivity to the components. The label also warns that treatment may need to be adjusted during stress, and that long-term use should be stopped gradually rather than abruptly when directed.

Storage Information

protecting against undesirable pharmacologic effects. Store at 20° to 25 °C (68° to 77 °F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30 °C (59° to 86 °F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight container, as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • This is a prescription corticosteroid used for a variety of inflammatory and immune-related conditions.
  • Take it exactly as directed; the label says dosage is variable and must be individualized.
  • Do not stop prednisone suddenly after long-term use unless instructed; the label says it should be withdrawn gradually.
  • Tell a healthcare professional about any current or past infections, including tuberculosis, hepatitis B, fungal infections, or amebiasis.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox (varicella) and measles if you are taking immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids.
  • Report signs of infection promptly, since corticosteroids can mask infection and increase infection risk.
  • Tell a healthcare professional if you have diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, glaucoma, peptic ulcer disease, renal insufficiency, or myasthenia gravis, as the label advises caution in these conditions.
  • Use caution with vaccinations; the label says patients on corticosteroids should not be vaccinated against smallpox.
  • The label notes possible mood, sleep, and psychiatric effects such as euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, depression, or psychotic symptoms.
  • If you have been taking corticosteroids during a period of stress, the label says dosage adjustments may be needed under medical supervision.

Helpful Patient Education

Prednisone tablets USP are oral prescription corticosteroids available in multiple strengths, including 10 mg. The DailyMed label describes their use in a wide range of inflammatory, allergic, endocrine, respiratory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and other conditions.

This medication can suppress the immune system and may increase the risk of infection or reactivate certain infections. The label also describes the importance of individualized dosing, gradual dose reduction after long-term therapy, and caution in patients with specific medical conditions.
