Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Prednisone tablets USP are a glucocorticoid corticosteroid available in 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg strengths. The tablets contain prednisone and inactive ingredients including lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate.

According to the label, prednisone tablets are used for many conditions, including endocrine, rheumatic, collagen, dermatologic, allergic, ophthalmic, respiratory, hematologic, neoplastic, edematous, gastrointestinal, nervous system, and miscellaneous disorders. The label describes prednisone as having potent anti-inflammatory effects and effects on the body's immune responses.

Prednisone tablets should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections or known hypersensitivity to components. The label includes important warnings about infection risk, tuberculosis, varicella, measles, hepatitis B reactivation, and other corticosteroid-related risks. Dosage is variable and must be individualized based on the disease being treated and the patient's response.

Storage Information

protecting against undesirable pharmacologic effects. Store at 20° to 25 °C (68° to 77 °F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30 °C (59° to 86 °F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight container, as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take prednisone exactly as prescribed; the dose is individualized based on the condition being treated.
  • Do not stop long-term prednisone suddenly; the label says it should be withdrawn gradually when stopping after prolonged therapy.
  • Tell a healthcare professional right away about signs of infection, since corticosteroids can increase infection risk and may hide some signs of infection.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox and measles if you are taking immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids; the label advises seeking medical advice if exposed.
  • Let a healthcare professional know about any history of tuberculosis, hepatitis B, fungal infection, amebiasis, or Strongyloides infestation, because the label includes special warnings for these conditions.
  • Use caution with vaccinations while taking corticosteroids; the label says patients should not be vaccinated against smallpox and other immunizations should generally not be undertaken on corticosteroids, especially high doses.
  • Report mood changes, insomnia, personality changes, or severe depression, as psychiatric effects are listed in the precautions.
  • Report vision changes or eye pain, since the label lists cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye problems as possible adverse reactions.
  • Follow instructions carefully if alternating-day therapy is prescribed; the label describes this as a specific corticosteroid dosing regimen.
  • Keep the medicine in the container it came in and follow the label storage instructions.
