Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Risperidone tablets are an oral atypical antipsychotic medicine. According to the label, they are used to treat schizophrenia, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.

The label warns that elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs have an increased risk of death, and risperidone is not approved for that use. The label also lists important risks such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, metabolic changes, orthostatic hypotension, blood count changes, seizures, and possible cognitive and motor impairment.

Dosing depends on the condition being treated, age group, and other factors such as kidney or liver impairment. The label says tablets come in several strengths and colors, including 0.5 mg red brown tablets.

Storage Information

Storage and Handling Risperidone tablets should be stored at controlled room temperature 15℃ to 25℃ (59°F to 77°F).

Key Counseling Points

  • Take risperidone exactly as prescribed on the label.
  • The tablet is for oral use.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had hypersensitivity to risperidone, paliperidone, or any tablet excipients.
  • Seek medical attention right away for symptoms listed in the warning sections, such as fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, unusual movements, or signs of stroke.
  • Report symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, or weakness.
  • Your prescriber may monitor weight, blood glucose, lipids, and blood counts during treatment.
  • Use caution with activities that require alertness, since the label warns about cognitive and motor impairment.
  • Risperidone may cause orthostatic hypotension; the label notes a lower starting dose and slower titration may be considered for patients at risk.
  • Do not change the dose on your own; the label describes different dosing schedules based on indication and patient factors.
  • If risperidone has been stopped, the label says initial titration should be followed when restarting treatment.

Helpful Patient Education

Risperidone tablets are a prescription oral atypical antipsychotic described in the DailyMed label for treatment of schizophrenia, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. The label includes age-based and condition-based dosing information, along with guidance for patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment and for certain drug interactions.

Educational label information also highlights important safety warnings, including increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis, metabolic changes, movement-related side effects, blood pressure effects, and possible blood count changes. This product page content is intended to summarize the label information in plain language for pharmacy education.
