Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Doxycycline hyclate capsules are an oral antibacterial medicine. The label says doxycycline should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria, and also for certain malaria prevention uses in short-term travelers.

The label lists many possible uses, including certain respiratory, sexually transmitted, rickettsial, and other bacterial infections, as well as severe acne and malaria prophylaxis. For some infections, culture and susceptibility testing are recommended because resistance can occur.

Important label warnings include tooth discoloration in developing teeth, risk of C. difficile-associated diarrhea, severe skin reactions, intracranial hypertension, photosensitivity, and esophageal irritation or ulceration. The label also says this medicine should not be used in people with hypersensitivity to any tetracycline.

Each capsule contains doxycycline hyclate equivalent to doxycycline 50 mg or 100 mg, along with inactive ingredients and capsule/printing components listed on the label.

Storage Information

Storage Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in tight, light-resistant containers (USP).

Key Counseling Points

  • Use this medicine only for bacterial infections or for a labeled prophylaxis use.
  • Take it exactly as directed and finish the full course if it is prescribed for an infection.
  • The label says to drink fluids with the capsules to help reduce esophageal irritation and ulceration.
  • If stomach irritation occurs, the label says doxycycline may be given with food or milk.
  • Avoid excessive sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light while taking doxycycline.
  • Stop the medicine and seek medical attention if severe skin reactions or a skin eruption occur.
  • Tell a clinician if diarrhea develops during or after treatment, especially watery or bloody stools.
  • The label warns that doxycycline can cause tooth discoloration during tooth development and should be used in children 8 years and younger only for severe or life-threatening conditions when benefits outweigh risks.
  • The label notes interactions with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, iron-containing products, bismuth subsalicylate, penicillin, anticoagulants, and some seizure or rifampin medicines.
  • For malaria prevention, the label says protection is not guaranteed and mosquito-avoidance measures are still needed.
