Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets are a prescription medicine used along with rest and physical therapy for short-term relief of muscle spasm related to acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The label says improvement may include less pain, tenderness, limited motion, and fewer interruptions in daily activities.

This medicine is not found effective for muscle spasm caused by central nervous system disease, spasticity from cerebral or spinal cord disease, or in children with cerebral palsy. It is meant for short use, generally up to 2 or 3 weeks, because longer use has not been shown to be effective.

Cyclobenzaprine may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness. The label also warns about serious risks including serotonin syndrome, heart-related contraindications, and interactions with alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants.

Storage Information

protect against the rare but potentially critical manifestations described above, obtain an ECG and immediately initiate cardiac monitoring. Protect the patient's airway, establish an intravenous line and initiate gastric decontamination. STORAGE Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Use this medicine only as directed for short-term treatment.
  • It is intended to be used with rest and physical therapy.
  • Drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness are common side effects.
  • Do not use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping an MAO inhibitor.
  • Tell a clinician about all serotonergic medicines you take, including SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, bupropion, meperidine, and verapamil.
  • Avoid alcohol and be cautious with other CNS depressants because the medicine may increase their effects.
  • Use caution if you have a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, or increased eye pressure.
  • The label says elderly patients should start with 5 mg and be titrated slowly upward.
  • If overdose is suspected, the label advises immediate medical attention and poison control consultation.

Helpful Patient Education
