Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Furosemide Tablets, USP are a diuretic medicine used to help remove extra fluid from the body. The label says they are used in adults and pediatric patients for edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including nephrotic syndrome.

The label also says oral furosemide may be used in adults to treat hypertension, either by itself or with other blood pressure medicines. It is a potent diuretic, so the dose and schedule must be individualized and careful medical supervision is required.

Important safety points on the label include risks of dehydration, low electrolytes, low potassium, dizziness or postural hypotension, hearing problems, and possible interactions with several other medicines. Patients may need monitoring of labs such as electrolytes, kidney function, and blood sugar.

The 80 mg tablets are white, round, flat face, facetted-edge scored tablets debossed with "19" on one side and plain on the other side.

Storage Information

Store at 68° to 77°F (20° to 25°C); excursions permitted to 59° to 86°F (15° to 30°C) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • This medicine is a diuretic, so it may increase urination.
  • Take it exactly as prescribed; the label says dosing must be adjusted to the individual patient.
  • Stand up slowly, since postural hypotension can occur.
  • Watch for symptoms of fluid or electrolyte loss such as dry mouth, thirst, weakness, cramps, dizziness, or nausea and vomiting.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have ringing in the ears or hearing changes.
  • The label says blood tests may be needed to check electrolytes, kidney function, and blood sugar.
  • Patients with diabetes should know furosemide may increase blood glucose and affect urine glucose tests.
  • Avoid taking furosemide with ethacrynic acid; the label also warns about interactions with aminoglycosides, lithium, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and some other drugs.
  • The skin of some patients may be more sensitive to sunlight while taking furosemide.
  • If you notice moderate or severe side effects, the label says dosage may need to be reduced or therapy withdrawn.

Helpful Patient Education

Furosemide Tablets, USP are an oral diuretic available in 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg strengths. According to the DailyMed label, this medicine is used for edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including nephrotic syndrome, and may also be used in adults for hypertension.

Educational product information for furosemide should emphasize its need for careful dose adjustment and monitoring. The label includes warnings about dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, low potassium, blood pressure changes, hearing effects, and multiple drug interactions, so it is important that patients follow the prescribed regimen and know which symptoms should be reported.
