Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Lisinopril tablets are an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure in adults and in children 6 years of age and older. The label also says it is used as adjunct therapy for systolic heart failure and to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack in hemodynamically stable patients within 24 hours of acute myocardial infarction.

The label includes a boxed warning for fetal toxicity. If pregnancy is detected, lisinopril should be discontinued as soon as possible because medicines that act on the renin-angiotensin system can harm the developing fetus.

Important safety issues listed on the label include angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney problems, high potassium, and liver injury. The tablet strengths are 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 40 mg.

Storage Information

Storage Store at 20 ºC to 25ºC (68ºF to 77ºF) [see USP controlled room temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Lisinopril can cause low blood pressure, especially after the first dose or when used with diuretics.
  • The label advises periodic monitoring of kidney function and serum potassium.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about NSAIDs, diuretics, lithium, potassium supplements, and potassium-containing salt substitutes.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking lisinopril according to the label.
  • If pregnancy is detected, lisinopril should be discontinued as soon as possible.
  • Report severe or unusual side effects, such as jaundice, liver problems, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Helpful Patient Education

Lisinopril tablets are an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor available in multiple strengths, including 30 mg. According to the DailyMed label, lisinopril is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older, as adjunct therapy for systolic heart failure, and for reducing mortality after acute myocardial infarction in hemodynamically stable patients.

This educational product information also highlights key label warnings and precautions, including fetal toxicity, angioedema, hypotension, renal impairment, hyperkalemia, and important drug interactions. It is intended to help patients and caregivers understand the labeled uses and safety information for lisinopril tablets.
