Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Prednisone Tablets, USP are prescription corticosteroid tablets that contain 1 mg prednisone. Prednisone is used for a wide range of conditions, including certain endocrine, rheumatic, allergic, skin, eye, respiratory, blood, gastrointestinal, and other inflammatory disorders, as listed on the label.

The label says prednisone can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infection. It should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections. The label also warns about risks such as fluid retention, high blood pressure, bone loss, mood changes, eye problems, and changes in blood sugar.

Dosage is individualized based on the condition being treated and the patient’s response. The label says prednisone should be reduced or stopped gradually after more than a few days of use, and that long-term therapy needs ongoing monitoring.

The tablets are beige, round, biconvex, scored on one side, and marked “PI” and “1” on the other side.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Dispense in a tight, child-resistant container as defined in the USP/NF.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take prednisone only as prescribed; the dose is individualized.
  • Do not stop prednisone suddenly if it has been taken for more than a few days; the label says to reduce it gradually.
  • Tell a healthcare professional if you have signs of infection, since prednisone can increase infection risk.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if you are taking immunosuppressant doses of corticosteroids.
  • Seek medical advice without delay if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles.
  • Report mood changes, insomnia, or other mental changes if they occur.
  • Long-term use may require monitoring of blood pressure, weight, blood glucose, and serum potassium.
  • Use caution with aspirin and mention any other medicines you take, since the label notes interactions and precautions.
  • The label warns that prednisone may affect the eyes and bones with prolonged use.
  • If you develop unusual stress while on corticosteroid therapy, the label says dosage changes may be needed by the prescriber.
