Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the effectiveness of oral ondansetron, a medication commonly used to treat nausea in dogs, compared to its intravenous (IV) form. This topic is important because while ondansetron is frequently prescribed in veterinary medicine, there is limited understanding of how well it works when given orally to dogs. Previous studies have suggested that oral ondansetron may not be very effective due to low absorption rates, which raises concerns about its use in treating nausea in dogs.

In this study, eight healthy dogs were involved in a crossover trial where they received both oral and IV ondansetron at a dose of 1 mg/kg. Blood samples were taken at various intervals to measure the drug's concentration in the bloodstream. The results showed that the oral form of ondansetron had a very low bioavailability of about 5.2%, meaning that only a small amount of the drug was absorbed into the bloodstream compared to the IV form, which had significantly higher concentrations at all time points measured. This suggests that the oral administration of ondansetron may not be effective for managing nausea in dogs.

The study has some limitations, including a small sample size and the fact that all dogs were spayed or neutered, which may affect the results. Additionally, the blood sampling period may not have been long enough to fully assess the drug's bioavailability. Pet owners should discuss these findings with their veterinarian, especially if their dog is experiencing nausea, as the effectiveness of oral ondansetron may be limited. Future research is needed to explore the drug's effects in dogs with specific health conditions, such as liver or kidney disease, where its efficacy might differ.
