Medication Summary
Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Overview
Lidocaine Viscous 2% is a topical anesthetic used on the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx. It is indicated for irritated or inflamed areas and may also be used to reduce gagging during X-rays and dental impressions.
The solution contains 20 mg of lidocaine hydrochloride per mL. It should be used exactly as prescribed because too much lidocaine, or doses given too close together, can lead to serious side effects.
The label includes a strong warning about life-threatening and fatal events in infants and young children, especially when dosing instructions are not followed. Use in children under 3 years old is limited, and it should generally not be used for teething pain.
Topical anesthesia in the mouth or throat can impair swallowing and increase the risk of aspiration. The label also warns about methemoglobinemia, a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention.
Key Counseling Points
- Use only for the prescribed indication.
- Measure the dose carefully with a measuring device.
- Do not use more often than prescribed.
- For mouth use, swish and spit out; for pharynx use, gargle and it may be swallowed, if directed.
- Do not eat for 60 minutes after use in the mouth or throat.
- Do not use food or chewing gum while the mouth or throat is numb.
- Keep the container tightly closed and stored out of reach of children.
- Seek emergency help right away if signs of toxicity occur, such as lethargy, shallow breathing, or seizure activity.
- Watch for signs of methemoglobinemia such as pale, gray, or blue skin, headache, fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, or fatigue.
- Discard unused product in a way that helps prevent exposure to children and pets.
