Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the effectiveness of combining ketorolac and paracetamol (acetaminophen) for managing postoperative pain following laminectomy surgery, compared to using paracetamol alone. This topic is important because effective pain management after surgery is crucial for patient recovery, and there is a growing interest in using non-opioid medications to reduce reliance on opioids, which can have significant side effects and risks of dependency. The study aims to provide evidence on whether this combination therapy can enhance pain relief and minimize opioid use in a surgical setting.

In this randomized, double-blinded clinical trial conducted at Kowsar Hospital in Iran, 90 adult patients undergoing laminectomy were divided into two groups: one received paracetamol alone, while the other received paracetamol combined with ketorolac. The primary outcomes measured were the amount of morphine consumed and pain intensity, assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), over the first 24 hours post-surgery. The results showed that the group receiving the combination therapy required significantly less morphine compared to the paracetamol-only group, although pain intensity scores were similar between the two groups. Additionally, the combination group exhibited more stable hemodynamic parameters, although some results were not statistically significant.

Despite the promising findings, the study has limitations, including its single-center design and moderate sample size, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Patients should be aware that while the combination therapy appears to reduce opioid needs and improve pain management, individual responses can vary. It is essential for patients to discuss their pain management options with healthcare professionals, especially regarding the use of non-opioid analgesics and any potential side effects or interactions with other medications they may be taking. Further research is needed to confirm these findings across different surgical procedures and patient populations.
