Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the effectiveness and safety of a treatment called spleen aminopeptide oral solution (SAOS) for children suffering from allergic rhinitis (AR) and adenoid hypertrophy (AH). This topic is significant because AR is a common condition that can severely impact a child's quality of life, and AH can lead to further complications such as breathing difficulties and sleep disturbances. As the incidence of AR is rising globally, finding effective non-surgical treatments for related conditions like AH is increasingly important for pediatric care.

In this randomized controlled trial, 100 children aged 3 to 12 with AR and AH were enrolled, with 78 completing the study. The children were divided into two groups: one received SAOS alongside standard treatments, while the control group received only standard treatments. After 8 weeks, the results showed that the SAOS group had a significant reduction in adenoid size and improvements in certain symptoms, such as mouth breathing and restless sleep, compared to the control group. Importantly, no adverse reactions to SAOS were reported during the treatment period, indicating it is a safe option.

However, the study has some limitations. For instance, it was conducted at a single center, and the sample size was affected by dropouts, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, while SAOS showed benefits, the symptoms of AH were not completely resolved after 8 weeks, suggesting that longer treatment or additional therapies may be necessary. Patients and caregivers should discuss these findings with healthcare professionals to understand the best treatment options for AR and AH, considering the potential need for extended therapy or alternative medications.
