Journal Article Summary
The article investigates the use of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to compare pharmaceutical treatments for menorrhagia, a condition characterized by heavy menstrual bleeding that can significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Traditional methods of evaluating treatment effectiveness often focus solely on health-related outcomes, which may not fully capture the broader implications of menorrhagia on women's lives. By exploring a different approach—willingness to pay (WTP)—the study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the value women place on different treatment options.
In this study, researchers conducted a cost-benefit analysis over a 24-month period involving 99 women from a UK primary care setting. Participants were asked to express how much they would be willing to pay for two treatments: the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and oral medication. The findings indicated that oral treatment was more cost-beneficial, costing £107 less than LNG-IUS while providing greater overall benefits, resulting in a positive net present value (NPV) of £45 for oral treatment compared to a negative NPV of £−68 for LNG-IUS.
Despite its strengths, the study has limitations, including a convenience sample that may not fully represent the broader population of women with menorrhagia. Additionally, the analysis focused solely on healthcare costs, excluding societal costs that could provide a more complete picture of the economic impact. Patients should discuss these findings with their healthcare professionals, particularly regarding treatment options for menorrhagia, as the study suggests oral treatment may be a more effective first-line option compared to LNG-IUS.
