Journal Article Summary

The article investigates the use of fish oil and probiotic supplements among pregnant women in four European countries: Finland, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom. This topic is significant because these supplements may offer health benefits during pregnancy, such as supporting fetal brain development and reducing the risk of certain conditions in offspring. However, there is limited information on how widely these supplements are used and the awareness of their recommended use among pregnant women across different countries.

The study surveyed 1,780 pregnant women through online questionnaires, collecting data on their supplement usage, awareness of recommendations, and beliefs about health effects. Results showed that 49% of participants used fish oil supplements, while only 10% used probiotics. Notably, Polish women had the highest awareness of fish oil recommendations, while Finnish women were most likely to know that probiotics are not recommended during pregnancy. The median intake of DHA from supplements was 220 mg per day, aligning with suggested guidelines.

Limitations of the study include a lower sample size from the UK and a high proportion of participants with university education, which may skew the results toward higher supplement use. Additionally, the study did not account for dietary intake of DHA from food sources, which could affect overall consumption levels. Readers should discuss with healthcare professionals about the appropriate use of these supplements during pregnancy, especially regarding the potential benefits and safety, as well as the importance of following national recommendations.
