Medication Summary
Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.
Overview
Children Acetaminophen Oral Solution contains acetaminophen 160 mg per 5 mL (teaspoonful) and is labeled as a pain reliever and fever reducer. It is used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains, including headache, toothache, pain from the common cold, flu, and sore throat, and to temporarily reduce fever.
The label warns not to use this product with any other medicine that contains acetaminophen, whether prescription or nonprescription. Severe liver damage may occur if more than 5 doses are taken in 24 hours. If there is any uncertainty about whether another product contains acetaminophen, the label advises asking a doctor or pharmacist.
The product should not be used if the child is allergic to acetaminophen or any inactive ingredient. The label also says to ask a doctor before use if the child has liver disease or is taking warfarin. For sore throat that is severe, lasts more than 2 days, or occurs with fever, headache, rash, nausea, or vomiting, the label advises prompt medical consultation.
Directions on the label say to use the dosing chart, and if possible dose by weight rather than age. Doses may be repeated every 4 hours as directed, and no more than 5 doses should be given in 24 hours.
