Suicidality and Antidepressant Drugs:
Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term studies of major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. Anyone considering the use of amitriptyline hydrochloride tablets or any other antidepressant in a child, adolescent, or young adult must balance this risk with the clinical need. Short-term studies did not show an increase in the risk of suicidality with antidepressants compared to placebo in adults beyond age 24; there was a reduction in risk with antidepressants compared to placebo in adults aged 65 and older. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. Families and caregivers should be advised of the need for close observation and communication with the prescriber. Amitriptyline hydrochloride is not approved for use in pediatric patients. Overview
Amitriptyline hydrochloride tablets are a prescription antidepressant used for the relief of symptoms of depression. The label notes that endogenous depression is more likely to respond than some other depressive states.

Storage Information
Protect the patient's airway, establish an intravenous line and initiate gastric decontamination. Store at 20º to 25ºC (68º to 77ºF); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) [See USP Controlled Room Temperature].

- Seek prompt medical attention if symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur, such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, fast heartbeat, muscle stiffness, or diarrhea.
- Do not take this medicine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors; the label lists this as contraindicated.
- Tell the prescriber about all other medicines, especially other antidepressants, triptans, fentanyl, lithium, tramadol, buspirone, tryptophan, St. John's Wort, linezolid, or intravenous methylene blue.
- Use caution with alcohol and other CNS depressants, since the medicine may enhance their effects.
- Be aware that this medicine may cause drowsiness or affect alertness needed for driving or operating machinery.
- Report symptoms that could suggest low sodium, such as headache, confusion, weakness, memory problems, or unsteadiness.
- Tell the prescriber about a history of seizures, urinary retention, glaucoma, heart disease, liver problems, or bipolar disorder screening concerns.
