Overview

Amlodipine besylate tablets are taken by mouth and belong to a class of medicines called calcium channel blockers. They are used alone or with other medicines to treat high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain, including chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina.

For people with coronary artery disease, amlodipine besylate tablets are also used to reduce the risk of hospitalization for angina and to reduce the risk of a coronary revascularization procedure in certain patients without heart failure or a low ejection fraction.

The usual adult starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 10 mg once daily. Some smaller, fragile, older, or liver-impaired adults may start at 2.5 mg once daily. In children ages 6 to 17 years, the effective dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily, and doses above 5 mg daily have not been studied.
