Overview

Amlodipine besylate tablets are a calcium channel blocker taken by mouth. They are used alone or with other medicines to treat high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain, including chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina.

For people with coronary artery disease documented by angiography, the medicine is indicated to reduce the risk of hospitalization for angina and to reduce the need for a coronary revascularization procedure.

The usual adult starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum of 10 mg once daily. Some patients, including small, fragile, elderly, or those with hepatic insufficiency, may start at 2.5 mg once daily. In children 6 to 17 years old, the effective dose is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily; doses above 5 mg daily have not been studied in pediatric patients.

• Take amlodipine once daily as directed.

• Pediatric use is described for ages 6 to 17 years; use in children under 6 years is not known.
