Overview

Amlodipine besylate tablets are a calcium channel blocker used by mouth. They may be used alone or with other medicines to treat high blood pressure, chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina, and certain patients with coronary artery disease.

For hypertension, the label says the medicine lowers blood pressure and that lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially stroke and heart attack. For coronary artery disease, it may help reduce hospitalizations for angina and the need for a coronary revascularization procedure in certain patients.

The usual adult starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum of 10 mg once daily. Some patients, including small, fragile, elderly, or those with hepatic insufficiency, may start at 2.5 mg once daily. In children 6 to 17 years old, the effective dose range is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily; doses above 5 mg daily have not been studied in pediatric patients.
