Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets are an oral antibiotic combination used to treat certain bacterial infections in adults and pediatric patients when the bacteria are expected to be susceptible. The label lists use for lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections, and urinary tract infections.

The product combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibacterial, with clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanate helps protect amoxicillin from certain beta-lactamase enzymes and extends its antibacterial spectrum to include some bacteria that are normally resistant to amoxicillin.

The label says the tablets may be taken without regard to meals, but taking them at the start of a meal can help improve clavulanate absorption and may reduce stomach upset. The 875 mg/125 mg tablet is one of the adult dosing strengths listed in the label.

Storage Information

protects amoxicillin from degradation by some beta-lactamase enzymes and extends the antibacterial spectrum of amoxicillin to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin. STORAGE AND HANDLING A moxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets USP, 250 mg/125 mg are white to off-white, oval shaped, film-coated tablets, debossed with ‘A’ on one side and ‘63’ on the other side, contains 250 mg of amoxicillin USP as the trihydrate and 125 mg of clavulanic acid as the potassium salt (equivalent to 149 mg of clavulanate potassium). Dispense in a tight container [see USP]. Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take the tablet as directed on the prescription label.
  • The label says it may be taken without regard to meals.
  • Taking it at the start of a meal may help improve clavulanate absorption and minimize gastrointestinal intolerance.
  • Tell your prescriber if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to penicillins, cephalosporins, amoxicillin, or clavulanate.
  • Do not use if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with this medicine.
  • Stop the medicine and seek medical attention if a serious allergic reaction or severe rash develops.
  • Contact a healthcare professional if diarrhea occurs, especially if it is severe or persistent.
  • The label says mononucleosis patients should avoid amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium because a rash may occur.
  • Tell your healthcare professional about probenecid, oral anticoagulants, allopurinol, or oral contraceptives, because interactions are listed in the label.
  • Use only for bacterial infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

Helpful Patient Education
