Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets are an oral antibacterial medicine. The label says it combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibacterial, with clavulanate potassium, which helps protect amoxicillin from certain beta-lactamase enzymes and broadens its antibacterial spectrum.

The tablets are indicated for certain infections in adults and pediatric patients caused by susceptible bacteria, including lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections, and urinary tract infections. The label also says it should not be used when testing shows the bacteria are susceptible to amoxicillin alone and do not produce beta-lactamase.

The label warns about serious allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, liver problems, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, and drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome. It also notes that using the medicine without a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection can increase the risk of drug-resistant bacteria.

Storage Information

protects amoxicillin from degradation by some beta-lactamase enzymes and extends the antibacterial spectrum of amoxicillin to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin. STORAGE AND HANDLING A moxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets USP, 250 mg/125 mg are white to off-white, oval shaped, film-coated tablets, debossed with ‘A’ on one side and ‘63’ on the other side, contains 250 mg of amoxicillin USP as the trihydrate and 125 mg of clavulanic acid as the potassium salt (equivalent to 149 mg of clavulanate potassium). Dispense in a tight container [see USP]. Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take this medicine only as directed for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
  • The label says it may be taken without regard to meals, but taking it at the start of a meal may help reduce stomach upset.
  • Tell a clinician about any history of serious allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, clavulanate, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Get medical attention if signs of a serious allergic reaction or severe skin reaction occur, such as rash that worsens, swelling, or breathing problems.
  • Report ongoing or severe diarrhea, since the label warns about Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea.
  • Report vomiting that occurs 1 to 4 hours after taking the medicine, especially if it is repeated, because the label describes drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome.
  • Tell a clinician if there is a history of liver problems or if symptoms of hepatitis or cholestatic jaundice occur.
  • Do not use the tablets for mononucleosis, because the label says a skin rash can occur.
  • Tell the clinician about probenecid, oral anticoagulants, allopurinol, or oral contraceptives before using this medicine.
  • Do not substitute this tablet for the 250 mg/62.5 mg chewable tablet, and do not substitute two 250 mg/125 mg tablets for one 500 mg/125 mg tablet.
