Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Atenolol tablets are a beta1-selective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, help manage angina pectoris due to coronary atherosclerosis, and reduce cardiovascular mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction.

The label describes atenolol as an oral tablet available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg strengths. It is intended for prescription use only. Atenolol works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, which can lower heart rate and blood pressure and reduce the heart’s oxygen demand.

This medicine should not be used in certain patients, including those with sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, overt cardiac failure, or a history of hypersensitivity to atenolol or its components. The label also warns against abrupt stopping, especially in patients with coronary artery disease.

Storage Information

Store at 20  to 25 C (68  to 77 F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take atenolol exactly as prescribed by the clinician.
  • Do not stop atenolol abruptly unless instructed, because sudden stopping can worsen angina and may be associated with heart attack or abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Tell the clinician about a history of heart failure, slow heart rate, heart block, bronchospastic disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, pheochromocytoma, or kidney problems.
  • Atenolol may mask warning signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat.
  • If the patient has diabetes or is fasting, vomiting, or not eating regularly, the label advises monitoring for hypoglycemia symptoms.
  • Atenolol can mask some signs of hyperthyroidism, such as tachycardia.
  • Use caution with other medicines that can slow the heart or lower blood pressure, including verapamil, diltiazem, digoxin, and certain antiarrhythmics.
  • The label says patients with bronchospastic disease generally should not receive beta-blockers; if atenolol is used, it should be used cautiously and a bronchodilator should be available.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should be aware the label warns atenolol can affect the fetus or nursing infant.
  • Report symptoms such as severe dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling, or unusual tiredness promptly.

Helpful Patient Education

Atenolol tablets are a prescription beta-blocker used for hypertension, long-term management of angina pectoris due to coronary atherosclerosis, and management of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute myocardial infarction. The label describes atenolol as a beta1-selective agent that can lower heart rate and blood pressure and reduce the heart’s oxygen needs.

This product information is based on DailyMed labeling and includes key safety topics such as contraindications, warnings about abrupt discontinuation, possible masking of low blood sugar, and cautions in patients with bronchospastic disease, kidney impairment, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
