Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Baclofen tablets, USP are a muscle relaxant and antispastic medicine taken by mouth. Each tablet contains 10 mg or 20 mg baclofen and includes inactive ingredients such as colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.

According to the label, baclofen is used to help relieve signs and symptoms of spasticity from multiple sclerosis, especially flexor spasms, pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity. It may also be of some value in spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases.

Baclofen is not indicated for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders. Its efficacy has not been established for stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s disease, so it is not recommended for those conditions.

The medicine can cause drowsiness and other central nervous system effects, and it should be stopped slowly unless serious side effects occur. Baclofen is primarily removed by the kidneys, so caution is advised in people with impaired renal function.

Key Counseling Points

  • Take baclofen exactly as prescribed; the dose is usually increased gradually.
  • Do not stop baclofen suddenly unless directed, because abrupt withdrawal has been linked to hallucinations and seizures.
  • Baclofen may cause drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, or fatigue.
  • Use caution with driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may add to baclofenu2019s effects.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, since dosage adjustment may be needed.
  • Report any seizure changes if you have epilepsy; monitoring may be needed.
  • The label states baclofen is not recommended for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders and is not established for stroke, cerebral palsy, or Parkinsonu2019s disease.
  • Store tablets in a tight, child-resistant container and keep them out of reach of children.
  • If therapy is not helping after a reasonable trial, the label says patients should be slowly withdrawn from the drug.
