Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Clonidine hydrochloride tablets are a prescription medicine used to treat hypertension. They may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines.

This medicine acts in the brain to lower sympathetic outflow, which can reduce peripheral resistance, heart rate, and blood pressure. Blood pressure may begin to fall within 30 to 60 minutes after an oral dose, with the maximum decrease usually occurring within 2 to 4 hours.

Do not stop taking clonidine suddenly without consulting the prescriber. Abrupt discontinuation has been associated with nervousness, agitation, headache, tremor, and a rapid rise in blood pressure, and rare serious events have been reported after withdrawal.

Storage Information

Store at 20oto 25oC (68o to 77oF) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take clonidine exactly as prescribed and do not discontinue it suddenly.
  • Blood pressure can rise quickly if clonidine is stopped too fast.
  • If the medicine is being stopped, the label says the dose should be reduced gradually over 2 to 4 days.
  • Tell the prescriber about all other medicines you take, especially beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptics, digitalis, calcium channel blockers, and other sedating medicines.
  • Clonidine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and accommodation problems; use caution with driving or operating machinery.
  • Alcohol, barbiturates, and other sedating drugs may increase the sedative effect.
  • Dry mouth, constipation, and sedation are common adverse effects reported with clonidine.
  • Contact lens wearers should know the medicine may cause dry eyes.
  • Report signs of slow heart rate or conduction problems, such as marked dizziness, fainting, or unusual fatigue, to a healthcare professional.
  • If you miss doses because of vomiting or illness, the label warns that children may be especially susceptible to blood pressure episodes from abrupt inability to take medication.

Helpful Patient Education
