Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Clonidine hydrochloride tablets are a prescription medicine used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). They may be used alone or together with other antihypertensive medicines.

This medicine is taken by mouth and is available in 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg, and 0.3 mg strengths. The 0.1 mg tablet is green, oval, and biconvex.

Clonidine works in the brain to reduce signals from the nervous system that can raise blood pressure. Blood pressure may start to decrease within 30 to 60 minutes after a dose, with the largest effect usually seen in 2 to 4 hours.

Storage Information

Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Take clonidine exactly as prescribed and do not stop it suddenly without consulting a physician.
  • Sudden stopping can cause nervousness, agitation, headache, tremor, and a rapid rise in blood pressure.
  • If clonidine and a beta-blocker are being used together, the beta-blocker should be stopped several days before clonidine is gradually discontinued, if therapy is being stopped.
  • Clonidine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or trouble with accommodation; use caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Alcohol, barbiturates, and other sedating drugs can increase clonidineu2019s sedative effects.
  • Clonidine may cause dry mouth and dry eyes.
  • Contact a clinician if severe symptoms occur, such as a very slow heartbeat, fainting, or unusual sedation.
  • Tell a clinician about all other medicines being taken, especially tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptics, digitalis, calcium channel blockers, or beta-blockers.
  • If vomiting or illness prevents taking doses, children may be at particular risk of blood pressure spikes from missed medication.
  • In case of overdose, signs can include high blood pressure early, then low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, sleepiness, breathing problems, and tiny pupils; urgent medical care is needed.

Helpful Patient Education

Clonidine hydrochloride tablets are prescription oral antihypertensive tablets used for the treatment of hypertension. According to the DailyMed label, clonidine may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. The label also describes that blood pressure may begin to fall within 30 to 60 minutes after a dose, with the greatest decrease generally occurring within 2 to 4 hours.

This product information includes common adverse effects such as dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and sedation. The label also warns against stopping clonidine suddenly because withdrawal can lead to a rapid rise in blood pressure and other symptoms. Patients should follow the prescribed dosing plan and review all concomitant medicines with a healthcare professional.
