Medication Summary

Medication Summary: This section summarizes DailyMed drug label information to make the label easier to understand. It is not a substitute for the official label, pharmacist counseling, prescriber instructions, or medical advice.

Overview

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets are an oral medicine used along with rest and physical therapy for short-term relief of muscle spasm from acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The label says it may help reduce muscle spasm and related pain, tenderness, limited motion, and trouble with daily activities.

This medicine is not for muscle spasm caused by central nervous system disease, and it has not been shown to be effective for spasticity related to cerebral or spinal cord disease or in children with cerebral palsy. It is meant for short use only, generally up to 2 or 3 weeks.

The label warns that cyclobenzaprine can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness, and it may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. It can also interact with alcohol, other CNS depressants, and certain serotonergic medicines, and it should not be used with MAO inhibitors or in certain heart conditions.

Storage Information

protect against the rare but potentially critical manifestations described above, obtain an ECG and immediately initiate cardiac monitoring. Protect the patient's airway, establish an intravenous line and initiate gastric decontamination. STORAGE Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature].

Key Counseling Points

  • Use this medicine only as directed and only for short-term treatment, generally up to 2 or 3 weeks.
  • It is used together with rest and physical therapy for acute muscle spasm.
  • Do not use it with MAO inhibitors, and avoid use within 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor.
  • Cyclobenzaprine may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred thinking.
  • Use caution with alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants because the medicine may enhance their effects.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about other serotonergic medicines, since serotonin syndrome has been reported with certain combinations.
  • Older adults and people with liver impairment may need a lower starting dose and slower dose increases.
  • Seek medical care right away if symptoms described for serotonin syndrome occur, such as confusion, agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, tremor, or muscle rigidity.
  • If an overdose is suspected, the label says emergency monitoring and poison control guidance are needed.

Helpful Patient Education

This product is intended for short-term use only, generally up to two or three weeks.
